A custom designed and created theme powered by WordPress.

Fèin-aithne is Gaelic for Knowledge. I have been in web design and development for over a decade. I have always pushed myself to explore new technologies and what browsers could do however in 2010 we are literally moving to a new age of information dissemination.
Today we have a wide range of devices on the market with it no long just being about the desktop. This will accelerate over the next decade as devices get smaller and more powerful. This is the 6th design of the Celtic Shadows website and the first to be built upon a CMS system.
This isn’t the first WordPress site I’ve run and I’ve spent the last year honing my skills on a number of projects notably on Blueprint and also Aberdeen Voice.
Fèin-aithne is a custom built theme from the ground up. It’s fully WordPress 3 compatible and uses:
- Widget Areas built into the Aside and Footer sections.
- WordPress 3 compatible menus located in the header and footer sections.
- HTML 5 tags and CSS 3 modules to allow for gracefall fallback for older browsers when those features aren’t present.
- JQuery powered menu system for the header to allow the drop down menu or use CSS fallback when JS is disabled.
The site was designed at the beginning of November in 2010 and would be my first scratch built theme. I had been using WordPress since late 2009 but using Suffusion to power Blueprint. However I wanted something different to what was on the market and I also wanted WordPress to become a CMS engine for the complete site.
So undertaking the project the complete site was built in two weeks in December which involved intensive learning about how WordPress works under the hood and to optimise all the JQuery and PHP code to ensure a fast loading time.
This is the first stage of Fèin-aithne and further development will include:
- Dashboard Options Panel
- Custom Posts
- Additional Theme pages such as JQuery/CSS 3 based galleries, Custom Post page designs and more
- Design and implement a mobile version of the Fèin-aithne
